Seven days . . .

A few months ago J went from rolling around, to sitting up, to scooting, and finally to crawling. It seemed like it was overnight. He was so quick with his toe-knee-hand maneuver I was amazed. We cheered for him as he would crawl to me, then to daddy, and then back to me. He would shyly peer over his shoulder as a toothless grin would appear on his intense little face.

I remember a few weeks ago when he stood straight up without any help. His three-toothed grin widened as I clapped for him. We celebrated as if my little Olympian had just secured the gold.

I've been counting down the weeks. Slowly.

J will turn one in just seven days. Seven days.

Yesterday we had family over. They were gathered in the kitchen preparing to leave. J was snuggled in my arms, his head resting on my shoulder. I put him down. He stood.

He took a step.

Then another.

And another.

Our family cheered.

J flashed them his four-toothed grin.

I smiled. I cheered.

But I cried. Just a little.

On the inside . . .

My baby boy will be one in seven days.

Seven days . . .

I love reading about you loving him.

Like most days at that age, they will go fast. Just keep digging your heels in and trying to slow it down.

This is so fun to read because I remember EVERY SINGLE BIT of excitement a little bit all over again that I felt with my first one's every step each time I read.

Is the party all planned? Looking back we went WAY, WAY, WAY OVER THE TOP for our first child's birthday. But hey.. it was our first child. He had a birthday. We CELEBRATED! LOL

Oh it's so exciting when they take those first few steps! Don't worry there will be many more firsts to come :-)

Jonathan started walking a week before his first birthday too.

I melted a little inside, thinking of my little boy growing up so fast.

Right now we are three months away from his second birthday. I swear I am in some kind of weird shock about it all.

How did it go by so fast?

i feel ya...my lil one is still a few months away, but i am already having panic attacks. my new rule..no more encouraging developmental behavior!!! he will just have to go thru life crawling. that way he will never really leave his mama :)

I LOVE it when they figure out how to turn baby steps into BIG steps! Hi, my name is Melissa B., and I'm introducing myself to you courtesy of my Bloggy Friend, Veggie Mom. I'm caving in to the commercial pressure and hosting a giveaway/contest starting tomorrow. I just returned from Asbury Park NJ, home to Jersey roots rock, aka Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Van Zandt, etc. I've got a couple of cool prizes to give away to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer, so tune please tune in!

Get ready. Walking means you cannot take your eyes off of him. It changes everything. One sounds scary, but you know what? You are going to love this age. So much synapse firing and "getting" it.

Rach (Mommy Learns to Blog) said...

Aww, he did it in front of everyone, what a special moment! I know those moments are bittersweet, but I promise there will be many, many more exciting and exhilarating firsts. Plus, there's always the bonus of counting chasing him as part of your daily workout now!

I'm crying just a little for you. And with you.

Why can't there be a "pause" button?

I, for one, have loved being apart of your journey.

And number one. That's a big one. It's ok to feel it, too. It's always been an emotional day for me.

So cool that he took his steps in front of the family! What a special and amazing moment for all of you.

wow! it does go fast. believe me i know and for some reason now that i have three it seems to go even faster for me. not sure why.

my son took his first steps on his dad's birthday which was 20 days before his bday... he took about 5 steps then he was done... then he didn't do it again till a wk before his bday and then he was full blown walking... and really he only stopped walking about a week after he learned, b/c then he started to run... and he hasn't slowed down since. :)

My girls were quick w/ walking too... Brooke walked at 11 months and then Lauren walked at 12 mths. Now my babies will be 5 & 3. I can't even imagine this.

enjoy and savor every single minute as you know they go far to quick.

They grow up too fast...seems like my niece should be a toddler not turning 10! At least you take time to savor the moments!!

Oh I know, I know. It just goes so fast. Why???? Why so fast???

It is terrible and wonderful how quickly it all goes by. My baby girl will be 16 in a few months, and I remember crying on her first birthday, her graduation from kindergarten...it just happened yesterday!

AWWWW! It is so hard to watch them grow up. SO HARD!

Sigh... All of their milestones are so bittersweet. We are so excited for their achievements but know that it means leaving another stage behind.

There's so much good stuff to come! Happy birthday in 7 days, J.

It's unbelievable how fast they grow up, and bittersweet every step of the way. First steps are so much fun!

This kid's a keeper, for sure! I remember when mine were this age. The first was a tad tentative, pulling herself up gracefully on the living room furniture. The second? She barrelled through her first 9 months, then decided "Enough of this--I'ma gonna walk now!" And she did! She's been running headlong at life every since! BTW, Uncle Lynn has authorized another Great Pop'rs Giveaway--it starts tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Mom said...

oh looks like trouble but in a good way!

Karen said...

You've documented the fact - they grow too fast.

Those first few moments of when you realize you don't get to redo those days are such impacts in my life. It really makes me not worry about the little stuff. As long as there is time in the day, I can be the mom they think I am!

Aw, what a cutie. I am finding that each new stage is better than the last! Enjoy him!

Whoo!! That is so great!!

I can so totally relate to being "sad" that your baby boy is turning one! It's kind like he's closer to turning into a daddy's boy, am I right?? Have no fear - he will still come running to you when he gets hurt playing with daddy...

krissy said...

Adorable...I don't know the kid but I love him because you love him so much.

The bond between mother and child....it is a total miracle. I love my sweetkins girl. I don't know what I would do without that child. Even when she is Miss. PissyPants.

oh, how sweet is he!!! the cutest ever! yay for walking!!!

I can't believe he is walking!:) YAY for baby J!

I truly can not believe that HJ and J are turning 1. Where does the time go?? It's so bittersweet. Miss ya. I'll be back more soon. Things are crazy here....moving sucks!

Unknown said...

How can these milestones be so wonderful and so hard to take all at the same time?? I know how you feel. But... there is much yet for J to do and see! : )

MamaGeek @ Works For Us said...

He was born and

*poof*

now he's one. Isn't that nuts?

He's beautiful and let me tell you now, enjoy the stepping phase. Once he's walking, well, everything is upped a notch. OY.

Wineplz said...

he will always be that baby you first held in your arms in the hospital, all scruncy-faced with goop in his eyes and beautiful.

(btw, Cooper took a few independent steps on his birthday and again a few days later...he's just too enthralled with crawling and cruising to just let go...maybe J will hold onto crawling and cruising a little longer, too, you know, just for you)

Bittersweet isn't it? Every single milestone is like that. "take a step!(no no, sit back down you are still a baby), you can do it! (now you'll start running away from me), yay! (*sniff*)"

Amy said...

Awww, it's gonna be okay momma! You think you're having fun, but one is a blast! And two really isn't so bad either. Now 13 kinda sucks, but you're a long way off from that ;-)

I came from a comment you left on shamelessly sassy -- my son turns one in six days, and I know EXACTLY how you feel. I'm really glad he's getting bigger, but I find myself tearing up when I think about how that little baby is gone...
he's not walking yet, I can't imagine how I'll feel then!
